DHET Leadership  | Profile of Deputy Minister Dr Dube-Ncube
Born in KwaMashu Township, Dr Nomusa Dube-Ncube made history on 10 August 2022 when she was sworn in as the first woman Premier of KwaZulu-Natal since South Africa’s democratic transition in 1994.
A dedicated activist of the African National Congress (ANC), Dr Dube-Ncube is also deeply committed to honoring the role of women in nation-building and advancing South Africa’s transformative agenda.

Professional Background
She has held several key leadership positions in both the public and diplomatic sectors. Before her tenure in the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature, she served as South Africa’s Ambassador to the Czech Republic. Within the provincial government, she served as: - MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (2009–2019)
- MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (2019–2020)
- MEC for Finance (2020–2022)
Dr Dube-Ncube has also contributed to global and environmental initiatives as a Member of the KwaZulu-Natal Climate Change Council and as a Board Member of the 911 Fund, a New York-based non-profit organisation established by former U.S. President Barack Obama.
On 22 July 2025, Dr Nomusa Dube-Ncube was sworn in as the Deputy Minister of Higher Education, continuing her lifelong commitment to public service and the empowerment of communities through education and sustainable development.
