Dr Mimmy Gondwe was appointed as the Deputy Minister for Higher Education on 30 June 2024.
Dr Gondwe has been a Member of Parliament for the Democratic Alliance since 2019 and has served in numerous Parliamentary Committees including the Committees on Public Enterprises; Public Service and Administration; and State Security. In addition to serving on these Committees, she has also served on the Joint Ethics Committee of Parliament and the Joint Constitutional Review Committee of Parliament.
Academic Qualifications
She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Philosophy from the University of Cape Town, a Bachelor of Laws from Rhodes University, and both a Master and Doctor of Laws in Mercantile Law from the University of Stellenbosch. While studying towards her PhD at the University of Stellenbosch, Gondwe was awarded a number of scholarships and grants in recognition of her academic achievements including the Fulbright Scholarship, the Andrew Mellon Foundation Scholarship and the Baden Wuttermberg Scholarship.
Dr Gondwe has a rich professional background in the legal, academic, and political spheres. Her career includes holding positions as a Content Advisor and Researcher at the Parliament of the Republic of South Africa and Junior Lecturer/ Research Assistant at the University of Stellenbosch.
Her leadership and dedication to public service have been evident in her various roles, including in that of mentoring young leaders and driving crucial national issues while still serving in the Portfolio Committees of Public Service and Administration and Public Enterprises.
