The African Union extends an invitation to postgraduate African students with permanent physical disabilities to apply for the Mwalimu Nyerere African Union Scholarship Scheme to study at an African university.

As stated, "The Mwalimu Nyerere African Union Scholarship Scheme was launched in 2007 with the aim of contributing to the production and retention of high calibre African human capital for sustainable development of the continent in critical development areas, while promoting regional integration through intra-African mobility of students." []

The aim of this scholarship is to enable postgraduate African students with disabilities to study at leading African universities. The binding agreement is that beneficiaries of this scholarship will work in an African country for at least three 3 years, or the same duration as the scholarship period, after graduation.

Who can apply?

African Union citizens and applicants with a permanent physical disabilities.


Be a citizen of an African Union Member State.
Have a physical disability
Be under the age of thirty five (35) years.
Be a holder of a Bachelor's Degree in the relevant field, at the level of Upper Second Class Honours. The degree must be from a reputable university.
Have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement as evidence by the transcript of academic, and of awards if any.
Be willing to commit to working in an African Union Member State upon completion of postgraduate studies for at least three (3) years and the same duration as the scholarship period.

Scholarship includes

Book allowance.
Air ticket.
Computer allowance.

Programme outline

The Pan African University is an initiative of the Heads of State and Government of the African Union. It is a Premier continental university network whose mission is to provide wholesome postgraduate education geared towards the achievement of a prosperous, integrated and peaceful Africa.

There are four universities across Africa focusing on Science and Technology in Kenya, Life Sciences in Nigeria, Governance and Humanities in Cameroon and Water and Energy Sciences in Algeria. The Pan African University is inviting all young, qualifying and talented applicants from African countries and the African Diaspora to apply for a Master's of PhD degree at any of the following institutes;

    1. Pan African University Institute for Basic Science, Technology and Innovation (PAUSTI), at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), Kenya.
    2. Pan African University Institute for Life and Earth Sciences-including Health and Agriculture (PAULESI), at the University of Ibadan (UI), Nigeria.
    3. Pan African University Institute for Governance, Humanities and Social Sciences (PAUGHSS), at the University of Yaounde II, and the University of Buea, Cameroon.
    4. Pan African University for Water and Energy Sciences – including climate changes (PAUWESI), at the University of Tlemcen, Algeria.

Who Can Apply

Holders of an undergraduate degree from a recognised university, with at least a second class upper division or its equivalent, in the relevant field (Master's applicants)
Holders of a Master's degree in a relevant field from PAU or any internationally recognised University (PhD applicants)
Be willing to work in Africa upon completion
Satisfactory English proficiency to enable full participation in a degree programme delivered in English.
